About HPA San Luis

The History of HPA San Luis

Harvest Preparatory Academy, a Non-Profit organization, broke ground back in 2014. This expansion of harvest was a great addition to the San Luis community. Dr and Mrs. Ybarra had a vision to provide a private education in a FREE public school when they opened the Yuma campus. Holding true to their mission the conception of growing in San Luis, AZ came true HPA San Luis is still going strong, striving to guide each student to a high level of academic achievement and success . The development of their personal dignity to their family , community , school and self, remains to be the foundation to attain this success.

Today Ms. Adel Espinoza is the Site Director at Harvest Prep in San Luis. As a charter school that is a public school. Mrs Esponosa embraces the community’s values and culture, ensuring the students have a comfortable and safe learning environment. Zero Tolerance on violence-bullying-drugs and alcohol. Harvest Prep is 89% hispanic population, the school has 60% english second language population. 50% tested out of the ESL program as English Proficient.

A charter school is a public school and FREE! HPA is privately owned and operated. HPA has the ability to decrease classroom sizes: studies show that the smaller classroom sizes produce bigger results in childrens’ education. HPA promotes structured learning environments. As part of their vision, HPA promotes a loving and caring environment. HPA chooses their teachers not only for their ability to teach but how they love and care for children Mrs Ybarra holds her teachers to very high standards and a moral education. Having moral literacy a person will be immeasurably better equipped and will be able to reach a reasoned and ethically defensible position on tough issues. Teachers must be active models. developing character in the kids and following the code of conduct that must be taught with absolute right and wrong.

Community Development

Because we care about our community and the people who live in our community, Harvest continually remains creative, planning events to support the cause.

Every year Harvest has hosted a Christmas Extravaganza ”Christmas around the world” for our students and family. Games, food tasting and prizes are given away each time. At the same event we raffle off bikes for the youth that we’ve collected over the precious year. Every year we do an Angel tree to help those families in need when at the same time we are working the Operation EggNog FOod drive to put together food boxes so those students and families won’t go hungry doing the holiday season.

Other events we do every year is Community clean up, we have adopted a road. Also, neighborhood yard clean up. This last summer we knocked on some doors offering to clean up the grass and rake the leaves.

Why Harvest?

See the Difference.

The program at Harvest Preparatory Academy differs from those offered at other public schools. While the major objective in public schools is to provide an excellent educational experience for each child, the process used to achieve excellence varies widely from school to school.

Harvest Preparatory Academy is Different For Many Reasons:

Time-Honored Curriculum And Teaching Methodology

As a traditional school, Harvest Preparatory Academy uses time-honored curriculum and teaching methodology rather than fad, fashion, and educational innovations. Harvest Preparatory Academy has a sequential and consistent curriculum across the grades.

Strong Emphasis on Reading, Writing, Spelling, And Phonics

Reading, writing, spelling, and phonics are daily activities in the lower grades. As students progress from skill to skill, more emphasis is placed on application. Reading instruction incorporates challenging literature and emphasizes the classics.

Parent Involvement is Encouraged

Parent involvement in the development and implementation of the school program is critical. Parents are actively involved as volunteers through the Harvest Preparatory Academy Programs.

Discipline

Discipline is tightly structured, with a calm and orderly atmosphere. There is a strong focus on high standards of dress and behavior.

Traditional Teaching Techniques

Traditional teaching techniques are required, including direct instruction, daily board work, dictation, and drill. In addition, students are required to read and report on a number of books and memorize and recite prose or poetry on a regular basis.

Regular Homework is a Given

Regular homework is a given. The purpose of homework is to: (1) develop personal responsibility; (2) reinforce class lessons and practice; and (3) inform parents about what and how their children are doing at school.

Helping Build a Good Self-Image is Through Solid Academic Achievement

The best way for a student to build a good self-image is through solid academic achievement. Harvest Preparatory Academy challenges each child to do his or her best and turn in work on time.

Accountability

Accountability is expected. Examinations, grading, and reports are essential so that each student may come to know his or her own strengths and limitations.
